Gianna retired

After having her last litter in 2009., Gianna was retired from competitions and breeding as well - she is a hunting companion of a friend on every week-end. Good life for a retired lady, eh? But she merits it well, she has been an excellent trial-dog as well as producer, all of her pups are outstanding in work, for caracther and healthwise.

Back home again ... - 04/12/2009.

and I found my best Christmas present in my postbox:

IGL Retriever Championship 2009. news - 01/12/2009.

Today our problem was not the frost, both Asca and Fay were in until the end of the day - but they were both out in the 3rd round.

After the 2nd round, coming out from the line, with Mr. John Halstead on my side:

Unfortunately when I got to line the ground changed from sugarbeet to who knows what, it was a mixture of two kind of plants, one was dry and the other is green with leafs, the dogs could hardly see out from it:

Most of the birds were shot on our side which ment that we did not get any retrieve for a long time since from the 3rd round we did cross retrieves - from one side of the line to the other. They shot two pheasants again on our side and when the first dog from the other side picked one pheasant the gun on the other side finally shot a bird - but what a bird! A partridge some 100-120 meters in these roots... We had this view:

and the gallery behind:

Asca marked it down as well as me but this time we missed that bit of luck that you need for trialling - everything came together: the judges first were discussing what to do with the pheasant which was still down on our side, in the meantime this small breeze also stopped which was on until that time... Finally I got the premission to send the dog, Asca took a perfect line to the bird but on the long way there first she flushed two partridges - she stopped and I handled her back - then she flushed a pheasant - I stopped her again and handled her back and by that time I lost my mark as well Asca did. There was nothing out there to mark to, I suspected the line but I had no idea about the depth and since there was a slight slope in the ground it was hard to guess. Anyway she started to hunt then the game-keeper told on the walkie-talkie to the judges that the bird is closer to the line - so the judges instructed me to send her more to the left - and STUPID ME!!! I sent her left... She was hunting again, found no bird so she was called up and the next dog found the bird where I started to hunt Asca first time... :-(((. After they got out from the line I asked him: did you know where the bird was? He said he knew the line and he did not obey the judges to send the dog more to the left... he was more clever than me.

Anyway it was a hard bird, everybody told me afterwards that this was the bird today they did not want to get. Not much reward but anyway I am very proud on Asca who were in line among the best ones so long and she did so well, she marked well, she was sharp on the whistle and did always what I asked from her.

And for the moment Asca is the first and only Field Trial Champion made up in England under the British rules from the Continent!

And I would like to thank everybody who helped me with their support via emails and SMS during these days!

IGL Retriever Championship 2009. news - 30/11/2009.
Fay and Asca are still in for the day 2!! So good luck for us, tomorrow the weather will be very cold with poor scenting conditions. And the mustard are smelling like hell... Ground is tough, kilometers long mustard and sugar beet fields, there is nothing to mark to.

Cca. half of the competitors were out, many of them on "first dog down failure" when the judges send the dog immediately when the bird drops on the ground - mostly when it is a runner - and if the first dog sent cannot find it unfortunately he is out even if the bird will never be found by other dogs or the judges...

Some pics about the first day:

IGL Retriever Championship 2009. news - 28/11/2009.

The competitors are online, there will be 56 !!! dogs .

In the draw Asca got the number 31. which is not so bad, but anyway we will get our first bird around 13:00 - 14:00 in the afternoon... Fay was more unlucky, got the number 46. which is quite at the end.

New Champions, going to the Championship:

2-Days Open Qualifier Field Trial, Checkley Wood, England - 16-17. November 2009.

Judges: Robin Watson, Vic Olner, Barry Cooper, Steve Polley

Ftch Blackthorn Ascella won the trial so she became BRITISH FIELD TRIAL CHAMPION and will run on the IGL RETRIEVER CHAMPIONSHIP 2009!!!

What a week this was! Amazing dog, wowww! She was doing so well during the whole 2 days - first day we had 3 straight, clean retrieve, 2 marks and 1 blind over a stream, all not too easy. Today she started with a 4th-dog-down eye-wipe on a cock pheasant in the roots (see photos), then she had a running partridge over a hedge and finally a pigeon shot in the rushbed over wire fence alongside a fast stream. She was just perfect however the running card was hard: experienced handlers like John and Sandra Halstead, Tess Lawrence, Sara Gadd, Philippa Williams, Linda Partridge, Leigh Jackson, Inga-Lean Djuberg (Kit's Dike was out on a first-dog-down failure, the bird has never been found... it is a pity because she also did very well on the first day) ...

All in all for the last round 3 dogs-handlers left: Sandra Halstead with Ftch Levenghyl Silvercloud of Drakeshead, Phil Highfield with Ftch Levenghyl Bee of Featherfly and me with Ftch Blackthorn Ascella. The judges needed 1-1 bird to finish the trial... we got a pigeon on the streamside bank in the big rush, only the gun knew where it was - and of course Asca ;-D. Sandra got a partridge which rolled into the stream and Phil a wounded bird on the hillside.

The final result:

1. Ftch Blackthorn Ascella handled by Rita Kökény

2. Ftch Levenghyl Bee of Featherfly handled by Phil Highfield

3. Ftch Levenghyl Silvercould of Drakeshead handled by Sandra Halstead

Guns' Choice: Searover Kits Dike handled by Inga-Lena Djuberg

The ground on the first day:

2nd day, in the roots:

Vic Olner showed me the area of the cock pheasant - Asca was under the cover ;-)

...but she started out with confidence toward her 4th-dog-down eye-wipe.

The ground of the last round, we were sent from the other side into the rush along the stream:

Open Qualifier Field Trial, Meols Hall, England - 11. November 2009.

Judges: Sandra Halstead, John Drury, Arthur Hewer, Peter Hargrave

FTCH Blackthorn Ascella won the trial and got also the Guns' Choice!

So in the future her name is FTCH GB FTW (Open and Novice) Blackthorn Ascella :-D

This was again a perfect day, sun was shining, judges were very competent and nice, guns shot evenly the birds, the ground was very challenging with different kind of plants and lot of muddy area with reed beds and water... There were some hard jobs for the dogs, many times they were working out of sight we could just hope that they were keeping the area. In the high grass we could not really handle them on the birds so much credit was given to individual hunting - Asca eye-wiped in the 4th round a dog, the bird was hidden in tough new reeds. She was handling perfectly, sharp on the whistle and of course some long distances were on her favour ;-). She did not care about hard briars if the straight line to the bird was over them - that's why the guns liked her so much but after the trial she needed some treatment...

Funny enough that for the last round only 2 dogs left - Drake's father, Chatston Monarch and Ascella:

At the price giving with the judges, the two cup sand the certificates:

The Munich Cup this year was again a perfect week-end to spend in Germany in beautiful environment, wonderful weather, nice judges, hunting-like tests and lots of friends. It was a hard competition with many competitors, I had to take Asca (right after giving away her puppies) instead of Chance who came into season in the last moment and I am very proud that she finished 5th place without any trainng before, from 41 dogs....I lost for her at least 4 points at the water with wrong strategy and bad luck, a steward lost for us some 2-3 points stepping behind us very loudly after a mark in the forest, Asca turned away from the mark and then lost it... Drake was 6th, András did a big mistake on a handling loosing 6 points for him!

This was a very successful week-end for my kennel, dogs from different combinations out of my two FTCH bitches were running excellent in all classes. Congratulations for the handlers!

The puppies from the D litter, 13 months old, and Libby, 15 months old provided a fair performance among the 2-2,5 years old dogs in the Novice Class, I was very-very happy with them!

The competition was hard, in the Open many dogs had FTW and FTCH titles so it was like a smaller championship... The tests were difficult (in the Open Class, from 22 starters only 7 were qualified) and the judging was very fair, thanks for the Lady Judges!

Beside the nice placements the Blackthorn dogs collected 3 Judges' Choice from the 4!

Also congratulations to my trainees, I know how much effort and how consequent work they did to achieve their good results!
